Crazy colored contact lenses

Contact lenses were actually developed in 1887, and these lenses were made out of blown glass. They were the first contact lens that could be tolerated by the eye. When he was creating them they had to be specially fitted to each person. He started the trials on rabbits, then tested them on himself, and finally he tested them on a small number of volunteers. The lenses were approximately 18 - 21 mm in diameter. These lenses were very large and could only be worn for a few hours at a time.
These contacts where the only ones that were ever made until the early 1930's when a polymethyl methacrylate lense was developed. These lenses were lighter and more convenient for people to wear. These contact lenses were a combination of glass and plastic.
It wasn't until 1949 when Louis Girard invented a similar for of contact lens, however his only covered the cornea. These contact lenses at the time were called corneal lenses. These contact lenses were a rigid plastic type material that sit just over the cornea, and not over the whole visual part of the eye. These contact lenses were not oxygen permeable, which means that the cornea could not "breath" while these lenses were in. This side effect caused a number of bad side effects.
Starting in the 1970's and going from there other contact lenses were
coming out that were oxygen permeable, which made it better for the eye because the eye could "breathe" while the contacts were being worn. The breakthrough in soft lenses came in 1959 when two Czech chemists made what they called Hydrophilic gel which made the contact lenses softer then they had ever seen before. They slowly became the best selling contact lenses in the United States because the soft lenses gave the wearer immediate comfort, and the rigid contacts of old had be be "worn" in to comfort.
Depending if you are using contact lenses to improve your sight, or if you are using them for a costume effect. The stuff they are made of has come a long way as you read.
